“Year in Review – 2023”

137. I reviewed 137 movies this year, not counting rewatches of “JAWS.” A lot of sneak attack surprises, a couple that stole 2 hours of my life I can never get back, and a plethora of new memories in front of a silver screen, armed with my popcorn bucket and candy. As a result of the writers and actors strike, Hollywood continued one of my favorite trends of late – smaller films galore filling the multiplex! A blessing in disguise and kept alive by the fact that tentpole franchises are collapsing left and right, earning the intellectual property a much needed siesta. As we head into a new year that hopefully yields a new Nicole Kidman AMC Theaters opening, I want to thank you all for visiting my little corner of the world and entertaining my ramblings, hopefully proving helpful as you surf streaming services looking for what to watch. Here’s to a great 2024 at the movies!

Without further adieu, my top 16 films of the year (in no particular order):

“A Good Person”

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”

“Oppenheimer”

“Year In Review – 2022”

A much better variety this year than I had expected or remembered when going back through the archives to compile this list. I’m loving the trend of new studios emerging with diverse content that isn’t necessarily continuation of tentpole franchises. I feel like we’re emerging from that era into a new frontier of cinema once again where “new” and “different” is the name of the game. We are due for this every 20 years or so phenomenon to occur.

Without further adieu, my top 12 movies of this year… cheers to what looks to be a great 2023!

Top Gun: Maverick

Violent Night

The Fableman’s

Spider-Man: No Way Home

X

Everything, Everywhere, All At Once

Terrifier 2

Smile

Barbarian

The Menu

Avatar: The Way of Water

The Banshees of Inisherin

“Year In Review – 2021”

Well, we’ve almost made it! 2020 2.0 couldn’t stop us from enjoying another year of movies. They may change our theatrical release dates, but they will never take our streaming! Thankfully, I was able to see more movies in a theater instead of at home on the couch. There’s still a sense of magic there for me. Unfortunately, I’ve found myself slacking more this year than last, which I feel bad about. I have a list of 20 or so movies I need to catch up on. With school, travel (seeing a movie on Mackinac Island!), and other life curveballs, I have often found escape in a darkened theater only to have words for a review find escapism from me. As part of a process improvement class, I devised a rapid improvement initiative to keep myself more on track here. My New Year’s resolution is to stick to a more regular schedule of programming here by implementing that plan.

Again, I thank all of you for stopping by and allowing me to be a small part of your lives. Here’s to a great 2022! Without further adieu, here are my top movies of 2021 in no particular order… (No, “Wonder Woman 1984” did not make the cut, and I almost put “Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar” on here)

“Year In Review – 2020”

It was a weird year. Thankfully, there were still enough movies to fill a year-end countdown! A newfound love for the drive-in theater, and even more scouring streaming than normal led to a really interesting 2020 lineup in my movie watching this year. Huge thank you to all of you, from all over the world, who visit my page to check out a random guy’s thoughts about movies. Can’t wait to see what 2021 has in store, and to continue to grow the page and connect with even more of you! Cheers!
