“Better Watch Out”

7.5

Well… that was unexpected.

You think you know where this is going, but even after things take a turn, it’s going to continue to surprise you until the final frame. There are much more endearing ways to get the girl, my man. Damn…

I was prepared for some violence, but not much can prepare you for the level of gore and how far down the rabbit hole this film is willing to go to show it. The main character deserves and Oscar for his take on the Norman Bates type. Very well done and entertaining, just not at all what was expected upon hitting play.

“Jack Frost”

6.4

No, not the cute one with Michael Keaton. The one about a cold blooded killer snowman resulting from genetic engineering and poor timing. Funny? Almost at times. Ridiculous? Oh yeah. Good? Debatable. I had to fully understand the back story for my Microsoft Teams background of a scary snowman.

“Thankskilling”

4.8

Don’t say I didn’t warn you… it’s not all hidden gems when you wander past the known titles in a streaming service. This one was pretty, pretty… pretty bad. Funny in some parts, but not enough to overcome the crap factor. And not the right crappy to make it endearing, as some of these are. When you fall asleep watching it, it’s not because of the tryptophan in the Thanksgiving turkey.

“I Blame Society”

7.4

Remember when everyone was worried what would happen to people who watched “Joker?” Well, those chickens have come home to roost. Basically, this is what happens when you watch too much true crime and get bored.

The style of this film is fascinating, and adds a nice differentiation to the film. The story I feel like I’ve seen before, but still left me entertained. If you’re looking for a movie you don’t have to think too much about, and will make you cock your head and go “what the actual f**k is going on right now”… here it is!

“The Love Witch”

8.1

Following the theme of strong femme fatales… “The Love Witch!”

Luring in her prey like a Venus Fly Trap, and allowing their own character flaws lead to their downfalls. Very Hitchcock, but very original in its interpretation and execution of the art of cinema. Fascinating to see a filmmaker make the artistic choice to light and shoot on film to form a piece that looks like it’s from the 60’s… when it was actually filmed less than 10 years ago. Fascinating to learn the backstory of the making of this film and be introduced to it through the lens of “The Last Drive In w/Joe Bob Briggs.” Have to plug Shudder every once in a while for its masterful curation of the horror genre for the streaming world.

This one is really hard to explain, but if you’re looking for something “out of the box”… definitely check it out.
