“Bad Boys: Ride or Die”

7.5

Was this batshit insane? Yes. Yes it was.

Did it still work? Hell yes it did!

What could have easily fallen into stupid territory somehow ended up in so stupid its fun territory that the “Fast & Furious” franchise has been aiming for for years now. The cast is perfect. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence really have these characters figured out, and the supporting cast they’ve assembled fire on all cylinders to deliver a powerhouse ensemble performance. I’m not sure the plot really matters. What matters is the creativity in the cinematography and the almost constant risk taking that pays off at every turn. They had fun with this one, and it comes through in almost every frame. A breath of fresh air in the middle of blockbusters trying to take themselves too seriously. Well done!

“Thelma”

8.2

This movie is INSANE! But it’s also insanely good.

In a sneak attack out of nowhere, this followed the likes of “Book Club” and “Last Vegas” to add a legendary chapter to the Elderly shenanigans cinematic universe. I laughed, I cried, I was on the edge of my seat… this one never missed! At a tight hour and a half, it was firing on all cylinders the entire time and had the sellout crowd cheering by the time the credits rolled. You can’t ask for a better popcorn flick with heart!

“Tires”

8.2

If you enjoy the comedy of Shane Gillis, you’ll find a streaming home for a ~3 hours here. I don’t think there was a work appropriate joke the entire run time, but found myself belly laughing every episode. The absurdity mixed with authenticity is what really makes this thing work. You almost forget they’re here to sell tires until we’re reminded right before (hopefully) season 2.

“South Park: The End of Obesity”

7.9

These special events are hitting too close to home lately. “Navigating the American Healthcare System” is enough to leave anyone who’s had to do it in real life in the fetal position. Your typical “South Park” shenanigans, a solid Randy Marsh side quest, and an uncomfortable look in the mirror at the world we live in that you’re less sure you’re supposed to laugh instead of be concerned about with each passing season.

“Abigail”

7.2

If Matt Bettinelli-Olpin is your director, your final girl will end up victorious, covered in blood, asking “what the fuck just happened?” Alongside the audience. Holy crap was that a wild ride, in the best way!

Much like 2019’s “Ready or Not,” I was not fully ready for this one. The story has so many twists and turns, you’re on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. More humor than expected, and as a fellow movie aficionado commented, much better developed characters than your typical studio horror film. We agreed on another, recovering our friendship after some disagreement over “Imaginary” earlier this year.

Alisha Weir and Kathryn Newton steal the show! Finally pulling me out of the rough run of mediocrity I’ve gotten stuck in the past couple of weeks with new releases.
