“At The Drive-In”

7.3

The cinematic answer to the question “why do you love movies?” Specifically, seeing movies at a theater. This tale of a drive-in in danger of closing, and a band of film lovers banding together to save a landmark and create memories to last a lifetime is an inspiration for chasing your dreams and fighting for what you believe in. The beauty of the community of film is on full display (no pun intended) in this great find scanning through Amazon Prime. The word of mouth documentary film that is to die for at a film festival. If I’m ever passing through Pennsylvania…

“Inside Game”

7.8

A great example of a story that a Hollywood screenwriter dreams of, that real life got to first. The fascinating tale of one of the most egregious sports scandals in history, just in time for legalized sports gambling sweeping the nation. Human fallibility, friendship, the beauty of competition and evils of greed… this one has it all. Well worth the hype from Donaghy himself on the radio/podcast circuit a few months back to promote the film.

“Narcos: Mexico” Season 2

9.1

One of the best seasons so far. The dynamic between agent Breslin and Miguel Gallardo is electric, and caps off the finale with one of the best speeches this side of Benicio Del Toro in “Sicario.” Controlled chaos slow long devolving into complete anarchy, only to be momentarily reigned back into temporary peace… however, Gallardo’s final line of “the animals have been set free” leaves a sense that the next season is going to be especially epic. The heinous violence this series has become known for, set in gorgeous set pieces. Rich characters, exciting “real life often writes better than Hollywood” story… another home run for the red menace. “The Wrecking Crew”

7.8

The storied history of some of the most legendary songs in music history… and the people who played them, that you didn’t know played them. The life of a studio musician. A definite off the wall find at the cinema own summer day, happened to be one of the most fascinating documentaries I’ve ever seen. And they thought Milli Vanilli was “groundbreaking”… an exceptionally informative film, combined with a legendary soundtrack packed with hits.

“Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound”

8.2

Officially a film geek, because these types of documentaries I always find fascinating. The storied history of sound design and film scores… a breathtaking art form, that movies just wouldn’t be the same without. It’s amazing how cyclical the film business can be, and how “happy accidents” often turn into historical masterpieces. The sense of adventure of early filmmakers is amazing.
