“New Mutants”

Go figure. Fox finally got the X-Men figured out and had an interesting launch point. Just in time for the studio to be bought out, the movie to be delayed for years, and for the film to finally come out when it no longer made sense narratively or tonally. Such promise, wasted for the most part. The perfect film to bury as the first major US release post-COVID cinema shutdown. The characters all have great backstories, intriguing powers, and a great dynamic that they develop as fellow test subjects/prisoners. All for not. Definitely worth a watch for fans of originality and of the X-Men franchise. If for no other reason, for the conspiracy laden “what-if” theories that are sure to plague this franchise for years to come.

A knock-off of “Sicario” in my book. A fairly mediocre action movie about gang violence. Shia LeBouf plays a fixer/tax collector, hence the name. Sometimes uncomfortable levels of onscreen violence ensue. George Lopez shows up for a hot second. Pretty run of the mill, overall.

“Greyhound”

Very “Bridge of Spies” or “The Post” for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a solid film. But this is the movie that gets nominated for Oscars galore because Tom Hanks is in it. There have been better war movies put out, but this will certainly kill 2 hours of your time, and is an addition to the growing collection of content on AppleTV+. Just seemed pretty safe bet all the way down the checklist.

“Da 5 Bloods”

Spike Lee, one of the great directors of our time, at the height of his powers. A tale of friendship, service, pain, family, the often complicated nature of humanity. All wrapped in a history lesson. You can always count on walking away from a Spike Lee film with a lesson and some things to think about. The film is also gorgeous both in setting and how it is shot. A mix of “Last Vegas” and “Apocalypse Now.” A lot of film to take in, but well worth the runtime.

“Twister”

The original, the legend! (Well, after the disaster films of the 70’s became a parody of themselves and took a siesta for a little over a decade.)

Nothing like the backdrop of mass destruction for a good old fashioned love story. *cough* Titanic *cough* These tornadoes have a vendetta for Jo’s family that would make the shark from JAWS blush.

A classic 90’s action blockbuster that will keep you on the edge of your seat for the duration. A beautiful display of the power of nature, and the effect it has on the people who directly experience it. Inspiring a generation of disaster films to follow.
