“Fly Me To The Moon”

7.8

This one genuinely surprised me. I didn’t expect these two to have such chemistry, and I didn’t expect the film to be so fun. The story itself is a conspiracy-lover’s dream. One of the ultimate historical easter eggs we all ponder from time to time. However, they don’t make it weird here. It actually works within what turns out to be a romantic comedy for the ages. Who woulda thunk it?

Channing Tatum really doesn’t get enough credit for his acting chops. I’m not afraid to give props to Magic Mike. The guy can act his ass off, and does here opposite of the always amazing Scarlett Johansson. Add in Woody Harrelson and Dean Pelton from “Community,” and you have a comedic juggernaut with heart for days. The 60’s aesthetic is to die for, as is the soundtrack front to back. Suit up, and prepare to enjoy a lighthearted balancing force alongside “Long Legs” at the multiplex this week.

“Hit Man”

Is there anything Glen Powell can’t do? (The answer is no)

He and Adria Arjona’s chemistry makes this whole thing tick. The story is bananas, but it’s the romance at the center of everything that really anchors the insanity and makes everything work. As with any type of film, it’s the heart that makes it work. As with most all of Netflix’s romantic comedies, this one knocks it out of the park. The streak continues. Strap in, and enjoy the ride of this incredibly fun caper.

“Ella Enchanted”

7.1

Did I watch this to have a more well informed conversation with a girl? The world may never know… don’t worry, I’ll still have free time to watch too many movies.

I struggled to get past the basis of the film being a woman who literally can’t not obey verbal commands… but I eventually was able to surrender to the fairytale charms.

The story may not necessarily be that original, but it has its moments. And, I mean, it’s Anne Hathaway…

Solid, right down the middle, not too shabby fairy tale… tale.

“Chasing Amy”

7.4

Through the process of obtaining my MBA, I was enlightened with terminology for so many things in the business world that I had known the intricacies of but had never had a term for… like a PDSA Cycle or Gemba Walk.

Finally! Leave it to Silent Bob to coin a term for the age old self destructed relationship that one posthumously idealizes and therefore chases with great fervor – we’re chasing Amy.

Unlike George Costanza, Ben Affleck convinces Alyssa to switch teams in the opposite direction, convincing her to join the ball and bat club… only to then stick his bat in a woodchipper on account of an all-time case of the yips. His perfect game, ruined by a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth. At least he had some content to keep his comic book illustration career afloat as a result of his dumbassed decisions in love. Some of us blog about movies.

This was a surprisingly humorous and realistic tale of love, friendship, conflict, and the messiness of life that I really enjoyed finally catching up on! A well-done recommendation from a friend.

“Snack Shack”

8.2

You all know I’m a sucker for summer coming of age films, so I had high hopes for this one… that it blew out of the water! It’s on par with “Everybody Wants Some” and “The Way Way Back” for me. Particularly because of the summer love triangle and theme of personal growth by way of a gauntlet of awkwardness the film puts the characters and its audience through. Our dynamic duo, entrepreneurial as they may be, broke the cardinal rule of the bro code and put a ho before their bro. I almost gave them a pass though, because I mean, Mika Abdalla comes out of nowhere as a force of nature as the girl next door AND lifeguard AND photographer. That’s a film vixen triple threat if I’ve ever seen one. She absolutely nails the part, as does the rest of the cast in their slotted roles. I especially enjoyed Nick Robinson in the cool older kid/mentor role.

A throwback to a comedy niche of old, and a nice (albeit awkward as hell) trip down memory lane.
