“Somm Trilogy”

8.3

One of the all-time great trilogies. I’ll say it. And not just because I was enjoying a bottle of the subject of these films myself while viewing. Have to test run the professional tasting methods yourself to use at future parties to impress fellow connoisseurs. This series brought a great depth to the field of sommeliers and the history of wine as a whole. Amazing culture to dive into and explore, and these films do so in a very reverent fashion through the lenses of the experts and pillars of the business. Very well done. Cheers!

“Bottle Shock”

7.3

Came recommended by a friend. Didn’t disappoint! The re-telling of the legendary Paris tasting that out California/American wine in the map retold through the talents of some of Hollywood’s best turns out to be a pretty great film. Alan Rickman shines as sommelier Steven Spurrier as he ventures to the US to prove that French wines will forever be the gold standard. Beautiful set pieces and an intriguing story. Pairs well with a bottle of the good stuff. Cheers!

“The Morning Show”

8.7

Hell of a legacy project for Jennifer Aniston. Steve Carell delves into a devious villain again, with a strong follow-up to the dad you root against the entire runtime of “The Way Way Back.” All involved deliver some of their best performances, in what turns into some of the quickest wit and high velocity dialogue you’ll experience this side of an Aaron Sorkin project. Handles heavy subject matter with grace and the respect it deserves, doesn’t shy away from the gray, and draws clear moral boundary lines when called upon. Brilliant balance in script and performance. And a cliffhanger for the ages! Can’t wait to see where this goes, and where Apple TV+ asserts itself in the streaming wars with high quality prestige pieces like this. Well done!

“Narcos: Mexico” Season 2

9.1

One of the best seasons so far. The dynamic between agent Breslin and Miguel Gallardo is electric, and caps off the finale with one of the best speeches this side of Benicio Del Toro in “Sicario.” Controlled chaos slow long devolving into complete anarchy, only to be momentarily reigned back into temporary peace… however, Gallardo’s final line of “the animals have been set free” leaves a sense that the next season is going to be especially epic. The heinous violence this series has become known for, set in gorgeous set pieces. Rich characters, exciting “real life often writes better than Hollywood” story… another home run for the red menace. Yep… this one’s got every ingredient for a solid Disney Chanel original movie. An adorable love story, with some good chuckles along the way. Coincidently, also the reason I got into watching “Modern Family.” Making my way through the nostalgia of the Disney+ library this week.
